What the members think!

Home » What the members think!

Having started learning Judo 55 years ago – and having retired/given up the sport twice, I first came to BSJC simply to watch my grandchildren practising.  Now, it seems that I am dusting off my Gi again and looking forward to being actively involved.  The reasons are simple – BSJC is possibly the best club I have ever been lucky enough to be a part of – the standard of coaching is top-rate and the atmosphere in the club is fantastic.  It genuinely feels like being part of a rather large family.  The level of achievement from both Juniors and Seniors is amazing.

Best regards

‘Outstanding Judo, and by far the best martial arts club I have ever encountered. Having studied / trained in martial arts for 30 years, and being an instructor in 2 other martial arts, I am well acquainted with Martial Arts Clubs. Nevertheless I was still amazed at the standard of Martial Arts at Bradley Stoke Judo Club; the continuing outstanding achievements and quiet humility of its coaches, who continue to lead by example and set the standard that students can and do live up to; the friendly, welcoming family environment; the very vocal support at competitions and continuous  warm and easy camaraderie amongst students and parents, (as well as parents who are students); notwithstanding the unfaltering pastoral support for ALL club members away from the mat.

Bradley Stoke Judo Club is in my opinion unparalleled, not only as a Judo club, but as a Martial Arts Club full stop.’

I joined the club in 2000, I was 16 and looking to be able to defend myself. What I found was a club that treats its members like family. I will always look back on it as a turning point in my life in terms of building confidence and self esteem. My coach wasnt just a coach, he was a role model. 12 years on the club is going from strength to strength and its great to still be a small part of it.

We arrived at Bradley Stoke Judo club simply because we could not find decent training partners for Lele as she was always hungry for bigger and better and BS had the players. Right from the start we found EVERYONE to be EXCEPTIONAL friendly and accommodating as well as enthusiastic and encouraging. Very quickly it felt as if we had joined a BIGGER family and Lele flourished under the coaches. Result, four months after joining she became the Commonwealth Champion – Say no more!

Not only is Bradley Stoke Judo Club  a warm, friendly and welcoming club, it is a top club with excellent coaches, who are fully committed. From beginners through to seniors, children are taught skills that will support them throughout their lives. Unlike some sports, Parents are encouraged to watch and support their children, giving the club a real family feel. There is something so special about this club that you simply won’t want to leave and that’s just a parent’s perspective!

Our club not only has fantastic coaching, but a great supportive family atmosphere. It brings out the best in all of the children and adults helping them achieve their true potential.

Commonwealth Judo championship medallists

Time Posted on Jan 25

What an eventful day it was!

We had two of our players qualify for the championship fight off: Steph Walker aka (Pit Bull) and Lele Nairne aka (Lele Nairne)! They were taken up to Cardiff the night before and given to the BJA squad team for safe keeping.

Commenwealth-awardsx-640Due to the size of the pools the girls got just two fights each which was a little disappointing.

The venue was a theatre and VERY GRAND. The girls started fighting around lunch time and luckily were fighting on mat 1 at the front of the stage. Steph fought first and annihilated her opposition with two EXCEPTIONALLY well executed Wasari’s.

Lele was next and she took out a very formidable looking opponent with a big ‘Ippon Seoinage’ in just 10 seconds.

The finals were a circus and really exciting especially the way the players entered the stage. Steph lost to the British champion by a whisker and a very small ‘Yuko’ but we are certain that this is the last time this girl is going to beat her.

Lele’s opponent ‘Zoe Hebbden’ a difficult play at the best of times went into TOP GEAR in the final and made Lele sweat, although Lele dominated and was never in and real danger. She got three scores against her opponent before finally nailing her for the gold and title of Commonwealth Champion.

Both girls said; “we couldn’t have done it without the support of Pete and Nick, parents and the rest of the club members”!

4 Players go to the commonwealth trials!

Time Posted on Dec 9

The autumn judo season just doesn't seem to want to end this year! However, this weekend will be the final event of the year as four Bradley Stoke warriors have traveled up to Thretford in Norfolk. Competing tomorrow will be James Hayes, Seff Walker and Lele Nairne, and then on Sunday they will all be cheering for big BLACK BELT Ben Attwood. They have been driven up and chaperoned by club coaches Nick Brace and Roy Walker so wish them all the very best and know we are being well represented.

…the successful finalists will be fighting it out in Cardiff from the 23rd to the 25th of January with the top players from the commonwealth!

A Silver for Ethan!

Ethan Nairne competing at Patchway!
We only had one player out this weekend who was Ethan Nairne who entered a contest at the Patchway club.He had been dying to try out all of the new techniques he has been assimilating just recently and did us proud as you can see from his short video.

Fight 1: He impressively won this with a sweep in just 4 seconds.

Fight 2: This was a bit more difficult and he got a yuko against him before getting the ippon.

Fight 3: He got a bit of a player in this one and had to work hard before reversing the throw for ippon.

Fight 4: The boy he fought in this fought is 12 next week and Ethan got an early Wazari against him and then made the mistake of throwing himself and the boy dropped on him for a hold down ippon.

By the way you may have noticed another BSJC player in the video who was British Champion  Miles Nelson who was the ref in Ethan’s last two fights!

Excellent Ethan!
