We sent 4 players to Thretford this weekend to be looked after by Nick and Roy and they did fantastically.

James Hays was the first up to fight and he was in his brand new u60 weight category which can make all of the difference until you become accustomed to it. Nick said he fought one of the biggest u60 players he had ever seen and although he won his first fight on this occasion didn’t make it into the final 4, but there is ALWAYS next time!

Lele Nairne had an interesting first fight against her old rival Georgina Keeble from Tamar who Lele has been exceptionally frustrated by this year by loosing to shido’s against her a number of times, but not today. She had a total of six fight and won all of the rest of her fights with ippons to take 1st place.

Steph Walker only had one other person in her weight group which can be a problem with the lighter weight groups. This was the British champion in her category and although she fought with the tenacity that has earned her the club name of ‘Pitt Bull’ she didn’t quite get first place but still qualifies for for a commonwealth placement.

BIG Ben Attwood made a great start and won his first fight, then lost to a Hanti to Reece Sandy, but still came third overall!

They all did great and so did the coaches for working with them so well.

So best of luck to our commonwealth players for when the fight at Cardiff on the 24th of January!

Commonwealth Judo championship medallists

What an eventful day it was!

We had two of our players qualify for the championship fight off: Steph Walker aka (Pit Bull) and Lele Nairne aka (Lele Nairne)! They were taken up to Cardiff the night before and given to the BJA squad team for safe keeping.

Due to the size of the pools the girls got just two fights each which was a little disappointing.

The venue was a theatre and VERY GRAND. The girls started fighting around lunch time and luckily were fighting on mat 1 at the front of the stage. Steph fought first and annihilated her opposition with two EXCEPTIONALLY well executed Wasari’s.

Lele was next and she took out a very formidable looking opponent with a big ‘Ippon Seoinage’ in just 10 seconds.

The finals were a circus and really exciting especially the way the players entered the stage. Steph lost to the British champion by a whisker and a very small ‘Yuko’ but we are certain that this is the last time this girl is going to beat her.

Lele’s opponent ‘Zoe Hebbden’ a difficult play at the best of times went into TOP GEAR in the final and made Lele sweat, although Lele dominated and was never in and real danger. She got three scores against her opponent before finally nailing her for the gold and title of Commonwealth Champion.

Both girls said; “we couldn’t have done it without the support of Pete and Nick, parents and the rest of the club members”!

The autumn judo season just doesn't seem to want to end this year! However, this weekend will be the final event of the year as four Bradley Stoke warriors have traveled up to Thretford in Norfolk. Competing tomorrow will be James Hayes, Seff Walker and Lele Nairne, and then on Sunday they will all be cheering for big BLACK BELT Ben Attwood. They have been driven up and chaperoned by club coaches Nick Brace and Roy Walker so wish them all the very best and know we are being well represented.

…the successful finalists will be fighting it out in Cardiff from the 23rd to the 25th of January with the top players from the commonwealth!

A Silver for Ethan!

Ethan Nairne competing at Patchway!

We only had one player out this weekend who was Ethan Nairne who entered a contest at the Patchway club.He had been dying to try out all of the new techniques he has been assimilating just recently and did us proud as you can see from his short video.

Fight 1: He impressively won this with a sweep in just 4 seconds.

Fight 2: This was a bit more difficult and he got a yuko against him before getting the ippon.

Fight 3: He got a bit of a player in this one and had to work hard before reversing the throw for ippon.

Fight 4: The boy he fought in this fought is 12 next week and Ethan got an early Wazari against him and then made the mistake of throwing himself and the boy dropped on him for a hold down ippon.

By the way you may have noticed another BSJC player in the video who was British Champion Miles Nelson who was the ref in Ethan’s last two fights!

Jan 28th/29th -Midland open Gold 2 ,Silver 2,Bronze 3 ,5th places 2
Jan 29th -North West Open Bronze 1.

What a January no wonder I'm feel so tired well done everyone.

Midland Area Under 20’s – January 28th & 29th

We took 12 players to this highly competitive 3-Star event (6 on each day). The competition was attended by over 1000 players from every corner of the country. Naturally, we were well supported by the BSJC “choir” of parents and family members.

Our team of gladiators comprised:

Ben Attwood - 3 fights –Bronze medal
Toby Attwood- 2 fights – Silver medal
Isaac Matthews- 4 fights – won two and just missed out on a medal
Eli Brittan – 5 fights – including a superb Te-Guruma counter for a spectacular ippon - Bronze medal
Hannah Pitt – 3 fights – beat the current British Champion – Bronze medal
Elle Young – 4 fights – won two against some tough players and just missed out on a medal
Megan Robinson – 5 fights – Bronze medal
Jack Reeves – 3 fights – Silver medal
Lele Nairne – 4 fights – Bronze medal
James Hayes – 5 fights, including a heart-stopping ippon in the very last second of one contest – Silver medal
Pete Miles – 5 fights – Gold medal
Myles Nelson – 3 fights – Gold medal

It would be unfair to pick out individuals because our players all fought out of their skins. Their attitudes both in victory and in defeat were terrific, and it was an honour to be a part of the team. I don’t think that any other club achieved the same ratio of medallists.

Thanks must also go to Ben A, James H and to Kevin Nairne for their help and support. At times we had players on 3 out of the 4 mats and they made sure that we always had someone at mat-side until I could get there from another mat.
