9 reasons to do judo!

Home » 9 reasons to do judo!

What conscientious and caring parent wouldn’t want their children to learn how to defend themselves?

…ESPECIALLY in this day and age!

Originally developed by the legendary “Japanese Samurai Warriors”, modern judo has evolved into a popular sport and discipline which with the correct training can be an awesome weapon to possess. However, modern Judo is far more than JUST a way of defending yourself, and offers the student many additional and far reaching benefits.

Here are just a few of them…

It’s GREAT fun: Almost EVERY child just loves to rough and tumble and what could be better than channeling their excess energy into a confidence-building skill that will benefit your child for the rest of their life.

Fitness: Judo as a sport helps builds psychical strength as well as agility and stamina (just take a look at some of our HIGH LEVEL teenage players) and you will understand what I mean. More importantly, it also helps to develop a strong character and a disciplined mind. It promotes lightening reactions, teaches creative strategy development and independent thought.

Self-confidence: Having the knowledge that you are VERY CAPABLE of defending  yourself gives students HUGE levels of self-confidence which works its way into every area of their lives!

Self-discipline: Most students who are encouraged by their parents and want to advance in the sport usually have their eye firmly fixed on one day achieving a converted black belt. There are no shortcuts, and every belt or tab the students gain requires EFFORT and has to be earned. The higher the grade or belt the more effort that is required. This self-discipline often rubs off into other areas of the judokas (judo student’s) life.

A WHOLESOME environment: The dojo (the place where judo is practiced) is a safe, healthy environment which leaves the serious student little time for mixing with those who may be a bad influence upon them or introduce them to unsocial habits.  In fact judo promotes and encourages leadership so the possibility of involvement with street gangs and other similar bad influences is considerably reduced.

Independence:  Judo by its very ethos promotes and develops high levels of self-reliance within the student which once again rubs off into other areas for their life and schoolwork.

Character building: Many shy or timid children begin to blossom immediately after joining judo clubs and learning the basic skills that begin to swell their levels of self-esteem.

Social development: Judo is very much about attitude and respect. It begins with learning and developing the right attitude which is EVERYTHING for success in life. Respecting the teachers and fellow students who we train with by looking after them and helping their advancement in the same way as others will do for us. The serious student can look forward to developing many strong bonds and friendships that are likely to last them a lifetime.

Standards and morals: The art of Judo promotes an ethos of respect and self-discipline where the student will be encouraged to be all they can be in every area of their life.

Although judo requires a high level of discipline to advance to the higher grades, Bradley Stoke Judo Club is a friendly and warm environment where children of all ages will quickly make friends and be encouraged to become the best that they can be by advancing at the speed which suits them.

WARNING:  Many children become almost INSTANTLY ADDICTED to the sport and stay with it for many years.

Commonwealth Judo championship medallists

Time Posted on Jan 25

What an eventful day it was!

We had two of our players qualify for the championship fight off: Steph Walker aka (Pit Bull) and Lele Nairne aka (Lele Nairne)! They were taken up to Cardiff the night before and given to the BJA squad team for safe keeping.

Commenwealth-awardsx-640Due to the size of the pools the girls got just two fights each which was a little disappointing.

The venue was a theatre and VERY GRAND. The girls started fighting around lunch time and luckily were fighting on mat 1 at the front of the stage. Steph fought first and annihilated her opposition with two EXCEPTIONALLY well executed Wasari’s.

Lele was next and she took out a very formidable looking opponent with a big ‘Ippon Seoinage’ in just 10 seconds.

The finals were a circus and really exciting especially the way the players entered the stage. Steph lost to the British champion by a whisker and a very small ‘Yuko’ but we are certain that this is the last time this girl is going to beat her.

Lele’s opponent ‘Zoe Hebbden’ a difficult play at the best of times went into TOP GEAR in the final and made Lele sweat, although Lele dominated and was never in and real danger. She got three scores against her opponent before finally nailing her for the gold and title of Commonwealth Champion.

Both girls said; “we couldn’t have done it without the support of Pete and Nick, parents and the rest of the club members”!

4 Players go to the commonwealth trials!

Time Posted on Dec 9

The autumn judo season just doesn't seem to want to end this year! However, this weekend will be the final event of the year as four Bradley Stoke warriors have traveled up to Thretford in Norfolk. Competing tomorrow will be James Hayes, Seff Walker and Lele Nairne, and then on Sunday they will all be cheering for big BLACK BELT Ben Attwood. They have been driven up and chaperoned by club coaches Nick Brace and Roy Walker so wish them all the very best and know we are being well represented.

…the successful finalists will be fighting it out in Cardiff from the 23rd to the 25th of January with the top players from the commonwealth!

A Silver for Ethan!

Ethan Nairne competing at Patchway!
We only had one player out this weekend who was Ethan Nairne who entered a contest at the Patchway club.He had been dying to try out all of the new techniques he has been assimilating just recently and did us proud as you can see from his short video.

Fight 1: He impressively won this with a sweep in just 4 seconds.

Fight 2: This was a bit more difficult and he got a yuko against him before getting the ippon.

Fight 3: He got a bit of a player in this one and had to work hard before reversing the throw for ippon.

Fight 4: The boy he fought in this fought is 12 next week and Ethan got an early Wazari against him and then made the mistake of throwing himself and the boy dropped on him for a hold down ippon.

By the way you may have noticed another BSJC player in the video who was British Champion  Miles Nelson who was the ref in Ethan’s last two fights!

Excellent Ethan!
